Our Lady Star of the Sea is located in the beachside suburb of Sumner, just a short 15 minute drive from the centre of Christchurch City. Sumner is surrounded by the Port Hills at the edge of Banks Peninsula and faces north over Pegasus Bay towards the Kaikoura Peninsula in the distance.
Although part of greater Christchurch and bordered by other hill suburbs, Sumner Village has a real small town feel and unique community. Sumner is a popular destination for people from Christchurch and also for tourists during the summer months due to its relaxed atmosphere and access to some of the best beaches within easy reach of Christchurch.
Sumner is a popular surfing spot and it also boasts many walking and cycling tracks, a skate ramp, surf club, as well as cafes, restaurants, shops and parks.
Sumner has several pre-schools and two state schools. Sumner also has a local medical centre, plunket rooms a volunteer fire brigade and an outstanding new library and community centre.
Sumner is a fantastic community for children, being surrounded by hills and the beach. Its roads are relatively quiet and safe and many children walk, scoot, skate or bike to school, a declining trend in an increasingly busy city.
